FIDM In Class Studio Grant 2014/15
Thanks to a generous grant from FIDM we were able to purchase professional studio lighting equipment to create an In-Class Studio that will allow students from all classes to participate in studio photography to prepare them for work in the field of photography and for future education in the arts.
This In-Class Studio allows students to have access to professional photographic equipment they might not otherwise have access to. Through participation in, and the use of, this new equipment students will gain life and career skills. This studio space offers the students’ creativity and allows them experimentation with their medium, light.
Students now have a site in which to experiment in order to create and design their photographs, while simultaneously learning how to set up and run such a studio space. They have the ability to come up with ideas to create diverse photographs and to learn how the space around their subject/s speaks as well. They have worked together on photo shoots helping with props, make-up, lighting, and other elements of set design. Through this the students learn the power of visual communication and how they can use this to capture interest, sway opinion, tell a story, create a mood, and much more.
The students have developed ideas and themes and then created sets and lighting and employed their understanding of design to create unique tableaux for their photographic works. They have seen first hand that there are many aspects to creating a studio photograph and there is a need for diverse talents and skills. The students are developing these talents and skills and preparing for their future.
We give many thanks and much gratitude to FIDM for this unique opportunity provided by their support!
